Facebook’s hiring spree adds nearly 1200 jobs

After a big year in 2014 and the acquisition of several technology startups, Facebook Inc. is looking to fill 1,159 new jobs across a wide range of positions.
“We are an ambitious company run by an ambitious CEO,” Sheryl Sanders, Facebook’s chief operating officer, told Reuters. “Our users are growing and our business is growing and we want to support that.”
2014 saw Facebook’s resources diverge into a variety of new projects, and the company had already hired several new teams to take up these challenges. This included the creation of a new drone development team, which added aeronautics experts and thermal engineers to Facebook’s roster.
Some of the jobs Facebook is currently looking to fill also include highly technical positions, some of which will be going to the drone team and others will be working on the Oculus Rift virtual reality device. The addition of logistics and supply chain positions to the Oculus team has led to speculation that the device could soon be ready for the market.
While many of the new positions involve complicated technical fields, not all of the new jobs require a graduate degree in engineering. 126 of the open positions are for advertising sales, and another 43 are for recruiters, who would assist in the further hiring of new employees.
Facebook also added numerous other positions for products like Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as various research projects involving artificial intelligence, database structure and more. Facebook is even adding a position dedicated to proving the social network’s value as an advertising platform in console gaming.
While many of the positions are located at Facebook’s Menlo Park campus, there are other jobs around the world in cities like Singapore, London and Buenos Aires.
The hiring drive would represent a nearly 14 percent increase over Facebook’s reported 8,348 full-time employees at the end of September, but even at nearly 10,000 employees, Facebook’s staff would still be a fraction of the size of other technology giants like Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp, both of whom employ 55,000 and 127,000 people respectively.
According to Facebook’s third quarter 2014 revenue figures, the company earned $384,000 per employee, which far exceeds Google’s $300,000 per employee and Microsoft’s $183,000 per employee.
