Forrester: HP a top supplier for private clouds in China

While it hasn’t made too big of a name for itself in the public cloud, the soon-to-split HP is a force to be reckoned with on the global map when it comes to private implementations, according to a new report from Forrester Research. That’s good news for the company as it comes under growing competition in its home markets.
The paywalled study listed HP among the top nine providers of software for private clouds in China alongside other familiar names such as IBM, Microsoft and VMware as well as local players like Bingosoft. Forrester ranked the vendors based on 24 different technology and business criteria.
In particular, the research firm singled out HP for the strength of its executive presence and ability to cooperate with local players. That’s an important priority in any region, but especially in China, where relationships matter and American players have encountered competitive challenges due to elevated tensions between Beijing and Washington over mutual snooping allegations.
IBM and EMC – which owns VMware – are among the players that have been hit hardest as Chinese companies increasingly shift their spending to local suppliers at the urging of the government. HP has also had to deal with the local dynamics, recently putting up a majority stake in its regional networking business for sale to keep on Beijing’s good side, but the study says it’s in a good position overall.
Forrester highlighted the size of the company’s local install base and revenue, while also pointing out the breadth of its portfolio. HP’s offerings are hardly unique, but the fact that it has everything from the infrastructure stack needed to set up a cloud to a development environment for building the applications running on top translates into a well-rounded proposition. The one-shop-shop pitch is especially attractive to Chinese firms that are scrambling to catch up with their Western peers and don’t have the time nor the will for a multi-year project to cobble together their environments from scratch.
