Sony dumps its unloved Music Unlimited service in new deal with Spotify

Sony Corp. is dumping its Music Unlimited music streaming service in a new partnership that will see music provided from Spotify Ltd.

The new Spotify-powered service named “Playstation Music” will launch in 41 markets including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil; of note its previous offering was only available in 19 countries.

The Music Unlimited service will close March 29th, and users with active subscriptions will receive up to 30 days of free access through March 29, 2015.

“We know how important music is to our community of gamers, and this partnership combines the best in music with the best in gaming” Vice President of Sony Network Entertainment Eric Lempel said in a statement. “PlayStation Network users will enjoy the convenience of linking your accounts to Spotify, making it easy to sign-up with your existing ID and subscribe to Spotify’s Premium service.”

The new service will launch initially on PS4 and PS3, as well as Xperia smartphones and tablets. Users will be able to play songs while playing games on PS4, giving users the ability to “soundtrack their gaming sessions with their favorite songs in the background.”

Although not made clear, it would appear that existing Spotify accounts will work with Playstation Music, with the company saying that users will be able to listen to their favorite playlists, “including existing playlists from current Spotify users” as well as Spotify curated playlists, complete with ability to enjoy the service on all of Spotify’s supported devices.

No one will be mourning the loss of Sony’s Music Unlimted. The service was never a popular one, and while it did offer a catolog of over 18 million songs, its user based never went past the low seven figure mark. The announcement though is great news for Spotify, who will now see its service installed and available for use on roughly 100 million Sony devices.
