Docker acquires second startup in a week to lure developers

MacBarely a week after its latest acquisition, Docker Inc. has absorbed yet another startup to bolster its ranks and technology arsenal. The deal shifts the focus back to the developers at the center of the containerization movement.

The Ontario-based Kitematic has created an open-source sandbox for running Docker instances, which only work with Linux out of the box, on Mac. The software implements its own virtual machine to host the containers and layers a graphic interface over the top that allows for quick installation of applications from the official repositories.

The most distinctive advantage that Kitematic offers over the default virtualization option for Mac available from Docker is simplicity. The tool leverages the latter’s recently launched configuration automation utility to quickly set up the virtual host for running containers in a process that takes under five minutes.

Once a developer has their instance up and running, they can use the more advanced capabilities of Kitematic to add basic networking capabilities, mount storage volumes and start collecting operational metrics. That functionality will likely merge with Docker’s default Mac installer in the wake of the acquisition as the startup works to broaden the appeal of its already hugely popular container engine.

Docker is not limiting its efforts to Mac, having recently struck a partnership with Microsoft to bring the technology to thee next release of Windows Server. Nor is the initiative focused exclusively on developers, for that matter.

The startup is also working to make containers easier to manage for operations professionals, who hold the key to widespread adoption in the enterprise. That was the motivation behind its previous buy, a software-defined networking startup called SocketPlane Inc. that developed a technology for simplifying connectivity amongng large Docker clusters.

Like that deal, the purchase of Kitematic is first and foremost a talent acquisition. No financial details were disclosed for either transaction.
