3D Robotic’s Inc has today launched Solo, a new drone that it claims is the world’s first smart drone.

The drone comes with two integrated Linux computers, one on the craft itself, and one in the controller that provide both autonomous flight and camera control.

Solo is said to delivers several world-first technologies, including unfettered in-flight access to GoPro controls, including wireless HD streaming straight to mobile devices, and computer-assisted Smart Shot flight features that are said to allow even new pilots to capture professional aerial video from day one.

“Solo uses advanced autonomy to make creativity easier.” 3D Robotics CEO Chris Anderson said in a statement sent to SiliconANGLE. “Rather than needing skill to capture a great shot, you can let the software do the work. Even better, you can be in the shot—you can be the subject of your life’s story, not just the director.”

The focus is all about the aerial filmmaking experience with the new drone and delivering what the company says can abstract users from flying so they can focus on getting great video.

“What our users really want is great shots” 3D Robotics Chief Revenue Office Colin Guinn added. “They want professional tools that enable them to get those shots easily and consistently, right out of the box. Solo delivers on this promise: You get the shot, every time.”

Solo’s feature include GPS satellite-guided flight, including auto takeoff and land, return home and the ability to instantly hit an e-brake and pause the drone midair.

On the camera side, the “smart controls” given users the ability to start and stop recording video via their GoPro while in flight, delivering what the company describes as “fat free” footage, offering what the user wants to have taken footage of versus footage from the entire flight. Users can also snap photos, change FOV, FPS and exposure compensation along with a number of other features remotely.

Along with a range of other features, one that will particularly appeal to drone users is the Solo Smart Battery, that not only monitors Solo’s remaining battery charge but also helps to account for location, so that the mobile app can give users relevant warnings about when to start heading home based on the Solo’s distance from the user.

A drone for the rest of us

As consumer level drones are becoming more popular the features continue to increase, and they are getting easier to use. But it does go without saying that particularly for the amateur that drones aren’t always that easy to fly, particularly when it comes to the ability to come to strife, whether that be through collision, landing or simply running out of power.

Offering 25 minute flying time, or 20 minutes with an attached GoPro, the Solo comes in a $999, not particularly cheap but for the rest of us who may not be that skilled in flying drones, or for that matter completely new to the space, for soundness of mind (it’s not infallible, but it comes close) this is the drone you’d want to own.
