How to avoid Game of Thrones spoilers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
If you are a Game of Thrones fan, you were probably pretty excited over the weekend for the first episode of the series’ fifth season. Unfortunately, someone leaked the first four episodes of the season, which means those who will be watching the show on HBO will be bombarded with tons of spoilers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and any other social media sites by those who chose to download the leaked videos.
If you’re like me, tired of seeing spoilers on Facebook, Twitter or anywhere else on the web, there’s still hope. There are ways to avoid spoilers without having to give up your favorite social networking sites or avoiding the Internet entirely.
Friends of Thrones
If you’re using Google Chrome, there’s a new plugin called Friends of Thrones, which will help you dodge GoT spoilers. What the plugin does is replace every GoT spoiler into a scene from the ’90’s popular sitcom Friends. Instead of reading about what’s happening to Tyrion, Sansa, Daenerys and the rest of the GoT characters, you’ll be reading memes or watching videos of Ross, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel and even Gunther. Friends of Thrones is still in beta, which means it can be a bit glitchy at times; but, hey, it still beats the hell out of waking up to a newsfeed full of GoT spoilers.
Spoiler Shield
This is an app for iOS and Android, as well as a Chrome extension that blocks spoilers on Facebook and Twitter. Spoiler Shield blocks over 50 popular TV and sports spoilers from the NFL, NBA, MLB and even college sports. It’s easy to choose the shows you want to block spoilers on; all you need to do is turn the shield on or off with a tap.
Tumblr Savior
Tumblr Savior is an extension available for Chrome, Safari, Opera and Firefox that helps you filter out things you don’t want to read about or see on Tumblr, as well as see more of what interests you. It features a Black List where you put all the things you don’t want to see on your feed and a White List where you put all the things you are interested in.
TweetDeck
If you’re an avid Twitter user, you can utilize TweetDeck, an application by Twitter that helps people manage their accounts to filter out spoilers. TweetDeck has a mute feature you can utilize to avoid spoilers. Just click on Settings, then Settings again, and you’ll see the Mute tab. Go to the Mute tab and fill out the appropriate space with username, hashtags or words that you don’t want to see.
Unspoiler
Filtering spoilers on social media is one thing, but what about the rest of the Internet? Unspoiler will handle that for you. You download Unspoiler once, and it will work anywhere on the web, from headlines to Facebook posts, Twitter and more. This extension allows you to write down which shows you want to be blocked, and if you browse the web and search for the terms you put on the list, it will be hidden behind a red line. No more spoilers!
