SaaSy buy: Atlassian acquires the company behind chat & video conferencing service Jitsi

hipchatSaaS enterprise solutions provider Atlassian Pty. Ltd. has acquired Blue Jimp SA, the makers of the open-source chat and video conferencing service Jitsi.

The price of the acquisition was not disclosed.

Based in Strasbourg, France, Blue Jimp’s Jitsi XMPP based service allows users to make secure audio/video calls, video conferences and chat sessions. The platform includes the WebRTC Jitsi Videobridge, that relays video rather than mixing it, providing improved scale with higher quality and lower latency.

Jitsi will be used to power Atlassian’s HipChat service. “Blue Jimp’s technology and expertise will make HipChat stronger and enable us to expand our video capabilities, all while improving your experience” a blog post about the acquisition notes.

“Blue Jimp brings a strong team of developers doing incredible things with group video chat, and we’re excited to welcome them into the Atlassian family” the blog post added.

HipChat, founded in 2010 but itself acquired by Atlassian in 2012, is currently one of Atlassian’s most popular products and offers a hosted private chat service for businesses that includes the ability to share ideas and files in persistent group chat rooms, video and more.

Atlassian has committed to continuing ongoing support of Jitsi, saying that “in order to maintain the spirit of Jitsi’s open source community, Atlassian and HipChat will continue to support and invest in the project.”

Atlassian is regarded as Australia’s most successful technology startup. Founded in 2002 by Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, the company has raised $210 million to-date. Investors include Dragoneer Investment Group, T. Rowe Price, and Accel Partners.

Blue Jimp one of many acquisitions for Atlassian and follows on from companies including BitBucket, Source Tree, HipChat, Wikidocs and doctape.
