Rock Band 4 will be co-published by peripheral maker Mad Catz
It has been a long time since a new Rock Band title was released—about three years to be exact, and that is only if you count the Frequency-like rhythm game Rock Band Blitz. It has been closer to five years since Rock Band 3.
Earlier this year, Rock Band maker Harmonix Music Systems Corp announced that it would finally be making a new game in the series, likely hoping that people have had time to recuperate from rival Guitar Hero’s oversaturation of the genre.
Now, Harmonix has announced that it will once again be teaming up with third-party peripheral maker Mad Catz Interactive Inc to publish the game, but this time Harmonix and Mad Catz will be co-publishers for the title.
“As a hard-core Rock Band fan, I can honestly say this is shaping up to be one of the biggest games of the year, and music fans are just going to go nuts for what Harmonix is creating!” wrote Mad Catz spokesperson Alex Verrey, “Not only that, but I truly believe that we’ll be delivering the very best music game controllers you’ve ever played with.”
Mad Catz is best known as a manufacturer of third-party peripherals for console games, especially game controllers. Verrey says that Mad Catz will not only be the exclusive hardware manufacturer for Rock Band 4’s new controllers, but it will also co-publish the game with Harmonix.
“Mad Catz have a deep appreciation for the amazing work by Harmonix and we can’t wait to play our part in delivering Rock Band to passionate gamers everywhere! Co-publishing the game allows us to work closer than ever before with Harmonix, delivering a seamless experience from game through hardware and ensuring that we focus on the needs of the gamer first and foremost!”
The new Rock Band game will allow players to carry over their purchased tracklists from previous games in the series. The developers are also working on enabling backwards compatibility for other games’ controllers as well, saying that the process is “challenging” but “something we’d love to happen.”
Rock Band 4 is set to release at the end of 2015 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. There are currently no plans for a PC or Wii U version.
