Players reportedly getting banned from GTA Online for using mods in GTA V

This has been a rough couple of weeks for the modding community. First, there was the huge uproar that Valve Corp caused by the sudden introduction and even more sudden removal of paid mods on Steam. Many players are still feeling burned by Steam (pun 100 percent intended), and now it looks like Rockstar Games Inc is the latest studio to take a swing at game mods.

Some players are not saying that they have received bans from Grand Theft Auto Online for using mods in Grand Theft Auto V. User reviews on Steam are piling up with people accusing Rockstar of banning players for using graphical mods that increase FOV. If you currently sort Steam reviews for GTA V by “Most Helpful,” you would have to scroll past about a hundred reviews before you find one that is genuinely positive.

“If you thought you were going to get a GTA optimized for PC, forget it,” one review reads. “Rockstar once again is doing everything in [their] power to stop single player mods and 3rd party patches, despite all of the aspects where the game is lacking.”

Is Rockstar anti-modding?

Several other reviewers claimed to have been banned for using mods, and a few criticized Rockstar as being “anti-modding.” Rockstar’s own End User License Agreement (EULA) does seem to suggest that the company is against modding. The EULA states, “You will not … reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, display, perform, prepare derivative works based on, or otherwise modify the Software, in whole or in part.”

While game communities often waste no time in grabbing their pitch forks for a good old fashioned witch hunt, Rockstar has yet to confirm that any players have been banned for single-player mods, but they have taken a stance against mods in multiplayer games in the past.

“Our fans do some amazing things with our games,” Rockstar previously told IGN, “but our priority is on making sure nothing detracts from the integrity of the GTA Online experience, and working to prevent anything that can potentially have a negative impact on the overall community.”
