The ability to run structured queries again unstructured data has become a staple feature of analytic systems in recent years, particularly in the Hadoop ecosystem. But the trend is only now reaching the NoSQL world, where Couchbase Inc. is breaking new ground with the debut of a relational access layer for its popular document store.

N1QL, which is pronounced “nickel” and stands for  Non-first Normal Form Query Language, represents a stark departure from its Hadoop-based predecessors in more ways than just the underlying storage paradigm. Whereas distributors of the data crunching platform have built structured access into their platforms with the goal of luring business analysts, Couchbase is targeting developers.

Both groups have historically relied mainly on traditional relational systems from the likes of Oracle for their work, which can make the switch to non-relational data management daunting. But developers often have it particularly hard since they’re not simply writing standalone queries like their business-minded peers but building entire applications.

Providing the speed and simplicity that employees have come to expect in the cloud era requires the ability to automatically translate requests into a format that the database can understand, which adds several more notches to the learning curve. N1QL allows developers to add that functionality to their projects using the same kind of relational logic they’ve been using before.

That avoids the need to become familiar with Couchbase’s native query syntax, a feature that is especially valuable in large organizations with sizable internal development teams where training everyone in the nuances of the database may take more time than the leadership cares to spend. The efficiencies gained from avoiding that should make the platform particularly appealing to companies embarking on their first NoSQL projects.

But that edge may not last very long. The fast pace of the competition in the database world practically guarantees that Couchbase’s rivals will match N1QL before long. The question is whether the company will be able to take advantage of its head-start in order to open a lead before that happens.

Couchbase is wasting no time, announcing integration with several popular business intelligence solutions in conjunction with the debut of the new query syntax, including Looker, Tableau Software Inc.’s wildly popular data visualization platform and a number of others.
