Doom returns to the arcade action roots of early shooters | #E32015
Fallout and Elder Scrolls maker Bethesda Softworks owns several studios through its publishing arm, ZeniMax Media, including veteran Dallas-based game maker Id Software, whose games helped define the first-person shooter genre starting with 1992’s Wolfenstein 3d.
Next year, Id is returning to those action-heavy FPS roots with a brand new Doom.
Originally intended to be Doom 4, the game underwent development hell (pun definitely intended) for a few years before being sent back to the drawing board in August 2013. After longtime Id head John Carmack left the company to be the new CTO for Oculus VR, the Doom team had to go it alone, but looking at the nearly 10-minute clip of gameplay shown off at E3, it looks like they may have pulled of something amazing.
Doom will include several of the classic game features that are usually missing in modern shooters, including health and ammo pickups, quick vertical movement, and non-stop action. Oh, and there are no regenerating health bars. Hell isn’t easy.
Aside from a challenging new single-player campaign, Doom will have several multiplayer modes that take advantage of the game’s fast-paced combat and agile movement. Some of the multiplayer game modes include freeze tag, domination, and clan arena
Build your own Doom levels
Doom was one of the earliest PC games to see fan-made mods, and the new game will make modding accessible to the average player with a new level designing tool called Doom Snapmap, which offers a drag-and-drop interface that allows users to custom design their own levels and game modes that are as simple or as complicated as they want them to be.
“Traditionally, we provided our tools to a community of players with the knowledge and ability to create additional content, and their work has inspired us,” said Marty Stratton, Executive Producer at Id Software. “So with this Doom we asked, ‘What if every player regardless of platform or past experience had the ability to build and instantly share their own creations?'”
He added, “At its core, Snapmap is about players never running out of fun and imaginative gameplay. It’s an easy to use in-game tool with uncompromising depth and capability.”
Doom will release in Spring 2016 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
