Leaked iPhone 6s images show new chip, faster download speeds, longer battery life
A new set of leaked images appears to show the internal upgrades Apple is a making to its rumored iPhone 6s.
According to a report from 9to5Mac, the iPhone 6s will come equipped with a chip from Qualcomm, known as the MDM9635M, and enable significantly faster download speeds than the chip found in current iPhone models.
First announced by Qualcomm in 2013, the chip only went into production last year and can achieve theoretical download speeds of 300Mbps on carrier Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. That is double the 150Mbps download speed the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are capable of.
As a result of the Qualcomm chip’s improved power efficiency, 9to5Mac reasons that an iPhone 6s, equipped with the new LTE chip, will likely have improved battery life over its predecessors.
It would be hard to estimate just how much battery life is gained, especially when combined with the power-saving features in iOS 9, the operating system the iPhone 6s is likely to ship with.

It is worth pointing out that the 300Mbps download speed for Qualcomm’s chip is a theoretical number, as ultimately the real-world download speed user’s experience – regardless of what their device may be capable of on paper – is limited to LTE speeds offered by their mobile carrier. In the U.S., 300Mbps is rarely achieved. A recent report from network testing firm OpenSignal ranked the U.S. 25th out of 29 countries when it comes to LTE speeds.
Last week a report from Bloomberg said that the iPhone 6s would feature the same exterior design as the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and come in the same two screen sizes: 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches.
On Tuesday, 9to5Mac published images – seemingly from the same set and source as the most recent images – of what is reportedly the rear metal casing of the iPhone 6s. The images appear to support the earlier rumors, showing an identical exterior design to that of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Other rumored features and component upgrades coming to the iPhone 6s include a more powerful A9 processor with 2GB of RAM, Force Touch, 7000 Series aluminum, a 12 megapixel rear camera, and an upgraded FaceTime camera.
