New Apple TV coming in September as Apple delays subscription TV service to 2016
A new report published Friday suggests that Apple plans to unveil its revamped Apple TV in September alongside this year’s new iPhones and iOS 9. Apple initially intended to take the wraps of updated Apple TV hardware at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June but, as The New York Times reported, postponed its plans as the product was “not ready for prime time.” Instead, WWDC focused on iOS 9 and the launch of Apple Music.
Following that move, it is perhaps no surprise that Apple now plans to debut the new Apple TV in September, as that is the company’s next big annual launch event.
The report, from BuzzFeed News, cites sources familiar with Apple’s plans who describe the new Apple TV as being “more polished” than earlier rumors suggested. The new Apple TV will also be slimmer than the current model and feature internal upgrades, including Apple’s new A8 chip, an increase in onboard storage, and support for Siri voice control.
According to the sources, the Apple TV’s remote has been “drastically improved” by a touchpad remote.
Alongside support for Apple Music, the new Apple TV will also come with a revamped user interface with support for Apple TV’s very own App Store. The new App Store will need dedicated apps, and to facilitate that Apple is reportedly also releasing an Apple TV software development kit in order for developers to build apps for the device.
In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was in talks with programmers to create its own 25-channel web TV service. Sources claimed Apple planned to launch the service for iOS devices, including iPhones, iPads and Apple TV set-top boxes in September.
The report today from BuzzFeed claims Apple is likely to postpone the launch of its streaming TV service to late 2015, or possibly early 2016, perhaps indicating that the company has not yet secured favorable deals with content providers.
Apart from the September release date, none of the Apple TV features reported today reveal anything we didn’t know already. Various reports earlier thus year revealed that a revamped Apple TV will support Siri, a dedicated App Store and come with a new touchpad remote.
