Terraria will be coming to Wii U and 3DS in early 2016

In the four years since its release, popular pixel art survival and crafting game Terraria has made the jump from PC to just about every other platform out there, including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, iOS, Android, Windows Phone and PlayStation Vita. Now the game’s developer, Re-Logic, has announced that Terraria is about to add two more platforms to that list: Wii U and 3DS.

“This represents a massive opportunity to bring Terraria to a whole new set of gamers whom may have never seen Terraria before – as well as a chance to explore what might be possible in the game with dual screen functionality,” the developer wrote in a post on its forum. “We hope you share in our excitement around the potential here!”

The Wii U version will support up to eight players for online multiplayer or up to four players for local split-screen, and the developer noted that with the Wii U gamepad, one player could use the gamepad screen while another player uses the television without the need for split-screen. The 3DS version will also support four player ad hoc multiplayer, but each person must own a copy of the game since it will not support download play.

“We were expecting to grow the Terraria fanbase outside of hardcore players like yourselves and open it up to complete newbies,” said Deanzor, a representative for 505 Games, the studio behind Terraria’s console ports. “To have your support too is very humbling and testament to the great community around this classic game.”

When asked of the development for Terraria’s Nintendo versions would slow down development for other platforms, Deanzor explained, “3DS is a completely different team, so no.”

Despite the fact that Terraria released over four years ago and frequently sells for less than $3 during a Steam Sale, the developer has continued to release major content patches that add new landscapes, items and more. This fact is even more impressive when you consider that Terraria was originally created by a tiny team consisting of only a handful of developers, with the bulk of the work being done by programmer and Re-Logic CEO Andrew Spinks.
