Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. rumored BlackBerry Venice: Specs, release date, more

A little over two months ago rumors started flying around that BlackBerry’s next smartphone dubbed the ‘Venice’ will run Android when it hits the market later this year. Some have even suggested that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has had a hand in developing the BlackBerry Venice – hence the dual-curved display we first glimpsed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) earlier this year.

Given that Samsung has just released a larger-screen version of its own dual-curved display smartphone, the Galaxy S6 edge+, it’s unlikely it would have helped create a strong competitor for its own handset; nevertheless, the two devices beg to be compared.

We know very little about the rumored BlackBerry Venice, but below is a comparison of its rumored features to those of the newly-launched Galaxy S6 edge+:

Design and dimension

Galaxy S6 edge+: 154.4 x 75.8 x 6.9mm, 153g. The device will be available in a new color, Silver Titanium, along with existing colors Black Sapphire, White Pearl and Gold Platinum.

BlackBerry Venice: Leaked images have shown a curved display, a speaker grille below the display, BlackBerry’s trademark button trio on the right side, and a headphone jack on the device’s bottom edge. The handset shown off at MWC had a slide out physical keyboard, but so far this has not shown up in any of the leaked images. Instead, the Venice has a virtual BB10 touchscreen keyboard.

Display

Galaxy S6 edge+: 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED, 2560 x 1440 (518ppi), dual edge screen.

BlackBerry Venice: 5.4-inch Quad HD screen with dual curved edges.

Internal components

Galaxy S6 edge+:  Samsung’s Exynos 7422 64-bit Octa core chip (2.1GHz Quad + 1.5GHz Quad), 4GB RAM, and 32GB or 64GB onboard storage.

BlackBerry Venice: Hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor clocked at 1.8GHz, Adreno 418 graphics, and 3GB of RAM.

Camera

Galaxy S6 edge+:  A 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera capable of shooting 4K.

BlackBerry Venice: A 18-megapixel rear camera. No detail on the front-facing camera.

Operating system

Galaxy S6 edge+: Android 5.1 (Lollipop).

BlackBerry Venice: Android 5.1 (Lollipop) incorporating BlackBerry Hub for Android.

Pricing and availability

Galaxy S6 edge+: 64GB at $914.99, 32GB at $814.99 from AT&T with no contract. The Galaxy S6 edge+ is available for pre-order in the U.S. now, and will be available in retail stores starting August 21, in the U.S. and Canada.

BlackBerry Venice: Rumors suggest a November on-sale date and available from AT&T and T-Mobile.

Admittedly it has been some time since BlackBerry has been a strong contender in the smartphone market; however, a device running Android combined with BlackBerry’s hardware package and enterprise software management capabilities may just be enough to grab consumer’s attention — even if only a little bit.
