Asking the big question: ‘Is there a hybrid Cloud?’ | #OSSV15

Is there a hybrid Coud? Where does it fit in? Is hybrid Cloud just Cloud, or is it a new category? theCUBE’s John Furrier and Jeff Frick will be looking for responses during day two of theCUBE’s coverage of OpenStack Silicon Valley 2015.

This is the big game, stakes are high, it is exciting

“OpenStack is at the tipping point. It is either going to tip the scales for adoption or fall back behind the pack,” according to Furrier.

Frick agreed, listing the five main players in the OpenStack race as AWS, Google, Azure, VMware and OpenStack. Asking, “Who is the sixth horse in the race?” Frick sees the field as open, with all established infrastructure players wanting to take part.

As the new smaller, lightweight, interactive engines are disrupting bigger engines, Furrier predicted, “The big opportunity is where the market is converging with software. This is the future architecture; Cloud is the key engine of innovation.”

Underestimating the effect of technology

Reviewing the morning’s keynote by speakers Derek Collison, CEO at Apcera, Inc.; Sheng Liang, cofounder and CEO at Rancher Labs; Adrian Otto, distinguished architect at Rackspace, Inc.; and James Watters, VP & GM, Cloud Platforms, at Pivotal, Frick quoted Collison as saying, “In five years from now, everything we think, everything we’re talking about is going to be different.”

Frick agreed, referring to Amara’s Law: “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run” and looking toward big changes on the way.

theCUBE’s media coverage for day two of OpenStack Silicon Valley 2015 will include an interview with Jonathan Donaldson, VP & GM, Software Defined Infrastructure at Intel. According to Furrier, the recent Mirantis, Inc. partnership represents Intel “putting big money” into the OpenStack race. Furrier also looked forward to a “surprise” interview with Lithium Technologies, Inc., and discussing how Lithium is using OpenStack for social data.
