‘Divinity: Original Sin 2’ Kickstarter surpasses the funding of the original in under a week

Belgian game company Larian Studios had a great run on Kickstarter with Divinity: Original Sin, which raised over $900,000 in 2013. Now the game’s sequel has blown past its predecessor, raising over $1 million in just a few days, and with 28 days remaining in its campaign, Divinity: Original Sin 2 might be a little bigger than the studio anticipated.

“It’s crazy enough that we blasted through our original goal of $500,000 in just 12 hours, but now we’ve hit $1,000,000 on just Day 5? Unbelievable!” Larian wrote in an update to its Kickstarter campaign on Friday. “The support we’ve received from you all has just been amazing. Thank you so much to each and every one of our backers: you’re helping this dream become a reality, and we’re very, very excited to work with you over the coming months to make this game something truly special.”

The game has already raised enough funds to meet three of its six currently posted stretch goals, and it is rapidly closing on the fourth. The stretch goals earned so far for the campaign include a strategist mode “for die hards”, skill trees, and racial skills.

“I’m very happy that racial skills are in because that is going to be very cool,” said Larian founder and CEO Swen Vincke said in a video update. “Now your origin story is also going to be linked to some special skills, and we’ll make sure that those are very cool skills.”

The remaining goals include an Undead race and story campaign, expanded skill trees, and an afterlife-like “Hall of Echoes” zone that will function as a home base for the player.

So far over 25,000 people have backed the campaign for Divinity: Original Sin 2, already nearly 6,000 more people than backed the original game. Since Larian is using Kickstarter for additional development money in is funding the bulk of the game itself, the project could quickly grow beyond the scope the studio originally imagined, especially with almost a month left in the campaign.

Larian’s success once again proves that there are more than enough gamers out there who are willing to support what were previously thought of as niche genres.
