Putting the disk back into the server | #VMworld
“It’s the right time, it’s the right thing to be happening … to put the disk back into the server,” said Springpath, Inc. CEO Terry Cunningham.
Cunningham spoke to Stu Miniman and Brian Gracely of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during VMworld 2015 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Cunningham thinks it’s about time storage took advantage of the benefits of virtualization.
“Other areas like virtualized computing have been enjoying those aspects for years — storage hasn’t,” he said. “So that’s why now, finally, the opportunity is here to reinvent storage.”
Hyperconvergent Lego
Springpath’s hyperconvergence software allows customers to have the server of their choice with the software as a layer on top. Cunningham explained: “It’s like Lego. We’ve got all these parts. You can assemble it using the software defined layer of Springpath into whatever it is you want. You can aggregate, disaggregate, assemble here, disassemble, and it’s much more agile. That’s what’s really driving this whole market shift.”
Cunningham sees a huge demand for simple, scalable, automated compute and storage all in one place, and he believes it is the time to make a “ubiquity play” to become the leader in the hyperconvergence market. “This is an opportunity to get millions of people consuming this technology, not 100 or 200,” he said.
