Exclusive interview: Amazon enters IoT maker market #reinvent
Amazon Web Services is jumping into the Internet of things today with the introduction of AWS IoT, a collection of devices and software services that people can user to experiment with self-monitoring and automatically controlled environments.
In an exclusive interview with SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier, Glenn Gore, Senior Manager of Technology Solutions at AWS, explained that customers can now buy a starter kit on Amazon.com that contains a variety of sensors, servo motors, dimmers and temperature and humidity controls. AWS is providing 11 services that developers can use for connection functions like gateways, message brokering, storage and security.
Amazon is essentially positioning AWS as the control mechanism for IoT environments, arguing that the complexity of creating dedicated servers is far greater than outsourcing everything to the cloud. “You can focus on the outcome instead of reinventing the wheel,” Gore said.
Amazon is showing a model greenhouse at its Re:invent conference in Las Vegas that combines items from the AWS IoT kit to measure temperature, humidity, soil moisture and other factors. Controls can be manipulated using its Echo voice-response assistant or programmed automatically in the cloud. For example, a script can be written to automatically open or close ventilation equipment if an increase in humidity or temperature is detected.
