Paradox Interactive acquires ‘Vampire: The Masquerade’ publisher White Wolf

Stockholm-based game publisher Paradox Interactive AB has announced that it has purchased White Wolf Publishing, the tabletop role-playing game publisher behind the popular World of Darkness franchise, which includes Vampire: The Masquerade and several other urban fantasy series set in the same universe.

Eve Online maker CCP Games was the previous owner of White Wolf, which it had purchased in 2006. CCP announced at the time that they would be making an MMO set in the World of Darkness universe, but last year the studio announced that the game had been cancelled after nearly nine years in development.

The development arm of Paradox is best known for its deeply complex strategy games like the Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings series. As a publisher, Paradox has released numerous other well known games, which include Colossal Order’s Cities: Skylines and Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity.

“Like Paradox’s games, White Wolf’s properties have dedicated, passionate communities. While there are similarities in spirit, White Wolf’s IPs have very different themes than Paradox’s titles, and deserve their own brand and team,” Fredrik Wester, CEO and President of Paradox Interactive, said in a statement. “We have great respect for White Wolf’s gaming worlds and see big opportunities for their expansion in the future under our new subsidiary.”

“Over the last 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with beloved studios like DICE and Paradox on the business management side of games, and as a developer earlier in my career,” added Tobias Sjögren, CEO of White Wolf Publishing. “I look forward to bringing my experience to bear as we pursue new ways to interact with White Wolf’s universes. The White Wolf IPs are well suited for all kinds of media and we see great potential to expand them in the future.”

The World of Darkness universe has been adapted into video games a few times in the past, most notably with the cult classic “flawed masterpiece” Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, developed by the now defunct Troika Games. Coincidentally, Troika co-founder Tim Cain worked on the production of the Paradox-published Pillars of Eternity.
