How to customize quick settings and status bar using Android Marshmallow’s hidden System UI Tuner
If you’re using Android 6.0 Marshmallow, you’ll find the quick settings tiles to toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and other settings useful. But what about the quick setting tiles you have no use for? Android Marshmallow allows you to customize the quick settings tiles you see in the Quick Settings panel, but it’s not immediately obvious how to do this.
To customize the quick settings shortcuts you see in the Quick Settings panel, you’ll first need to enable the System UI Tuner.
How to enable the hidden System UI Tuner on Android Marshmallow
To enable the System UI Tuner, swipe down twice on the Android notification shade to expand it completely. Then, press and hold the Settings cog and release it once it starts spinning. Now the device Settings menu will load and inform you that the System UI Tuner is now enabled.
How to customize quick settings tiles in the Quick Settings panel
To select which quick settings shortcuts you want to show up when you pull down the Android notification shade, pull down the notification shade, tap the Settings cog, tap the System UI Tuner you enabled in the previous step and select Quick settings. Now, tap and hold quick settings tiles to rearrange them or drag unwanted tiles into the trash can.
As soon as you’ve deleted one unwanted quick settings tile, you’ll be able to add a tile of your choosing via the plus sign at the bottom.
To restore the Quick Settings panel to its default state, tap the Menu button and tap Reset. This will remove your customizations and display the default quick settings tiles.
How to hide icons in the Status bar
You can also tweak and clear up clutter in your Status bar by opting to hide icons like the Cast, Hotspot, Bluetooth, Do not disturb, Alarm, Work profile, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Cellular data, and Airplane mode icons. Go to System UI Tuner > Status bar and select which icons to hide.
How to show embedded battery percentage in Status bar
By default, Android only shows a shaded battery icon to represent the remaining battery charge. To take the guessing out of determining how much battery you have left, you can display an embedded percentage in the shaded battery icon. To enable this, go to System UI Tuner and toggle on the Show embedded battery percentage option below Status bar.
