Do the benefits of all-flash storage justify the expense? | #HPEDiscover

The move to flash storage has taken the industry by storm, but some still balk at the expense and wonder if it’s worth it.

John Furrier and Dave Vellante, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, sat down with Vish Mulchand, senior director of product management and marketing at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE), during HPE Discover 2015 in London to get his perspective. Joining Mulchand for the interview was Kai Viljanen, IT architect at TeliaSonera, an HPE Storage customer.

Mulchand talked about the way companies are making the move to flash at their own pace and for their own benefit as businesses, not just to have the latest technology.  “The all flash data center conversation is happening,” Mulchand said. “I think there are variations of where people are in that life cycle.”

Real-world benefits of flash

Viljanen talked about TeliaSonera’s experiences moving data to flash years ago when it was even more expensive. Gladly, costs are dropping now, but Valjanen maintained that even with the extra expense, the real benefits of flash to his business have justified the costs. Response time is one benefit that translates to business results, he explained.

“For example, when the customer calls the help desk, then the help desk resource has to make some kind of database query, and the response is instant,” Viljanen said. “And he or she can reply to the customer. And you have a happy customer.”
