The 2015 Steam Winter Sale is live with deals on nearly 10k games

The rumors were true — the 2015 Steam Winter Sale has officially begun, and the Steam Store is offering huge discounts on nearly 10,000 games both new and old, making this a great time to buy digital gifts for your friends. The sale runs from today until 10 a.m. PST on January 4.

This year’s Winter Sale is a little different than it has been in the past. Like the Steam Autumn Sale in November, the Winter Sale no longer features Daily Deals or Flash Sales, so whatever discounts you see now are going to stay the same through the end of the sale.

Another difference this year is the way you earn the holiday sale trading cards. Previously, users could earn Steam trading cards by participating in votes for the next Community Choice discount, but since Valve Corp. is no longer offering Community Choice discounts during the sale, the cards are now earned simply by browsing your discovery queue, which lists game suggestions based on your Steam library.

As with the previous rewards for voting, you can earn a total of three cards per day, but fortunately you can now earn them all at once rather than having to log in once every eight hours. The cards are free to earn, and if you don’t care about unlocking the Winter Sale badge, you can sell them individually on the Steam marketplace at the current rate of about 11 cents each.

Here are a few of the top-selling deals offered as part of the sale:

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive -50% $7.49
