‘Mr. Robot’ wins best TV drama Golden Globe, but the brilliant Rami Malek only gets a nod of appreciation

USA Network’s hacker series Mr.Robot beat out other popular TV series, such as Game of Thrones, Empire and Narcos, to win this year’s Best TV Drama at the Golden Globes. Series creator, Sam Esmail, collected the award, stood amongst the series’ actors and producers, and stated that it “took a lot of courage” to give the prize to them – perhaps because the show’s subject matter is controversial and somewhat dark. Esmail also thanked his “brilliant” protagonist, Rami Malek, who admittedly overshadows the performances of Mr. Robot’s other fine cast members.

Malek, however, didn’t pick up an award for his portrayal of a drug-addicted, psychologically imperiled hacker. Malek was in the running but was beat by Mad Men’s Jon Hamm. Christian Slater, who plays a figment of Malek’s imagination in the series, took one more award for Mr. Robot for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited-Series or TV Movie. Slater took to the stage saying, “Thank you Sam Esmail for writing such a wonderful character and for being such a creative and brilliant genius.”

No doubt a huge underdog considering the global popularity of a show like Game of Thrones, Mr. Robot has achieved something many shows have not – realistically portraying computer technology on the screen. Not only that – and given our modern immersion with tech – it also combined this with real world, contemporary issues such as pervasive debt, addiction, surveillance, and the machinations of those that control or vie to control information. As we called it from the start, Mr. Robot is a “show of our times,” a brave and intelligent series that has for the first time presented us hacking, some of its inspirations and consequences, realistically.

Season 2 of Mr. Robot should be coming in July 2016. Esmail apparently hasn’t even told the cast how their roles will play out, but we do know that the show is going to get harder and darker. You can watch the entire first season, uncensored, or enhanced, here.
