Facebook celebrates its 12th birthday with cheesy bromance slideshows and best friend stickers

Today marks the 12-year anniversary since Facebook first began turning the word “friend” into a verb, and as usual, the company is celebrating its birthday with its annual Friends Day event, which focuses on the connections people have made through the social network.

“When people connect, powerful things happen and lives are changed,” Facebook said in a blog post. “We see this on Facebook every day, whether it’s an exchange with an old friend that brings a smile to your face or a new connection that changes your life path, or even the world.”

“To celebrate, we are releasing an updated degrees of separation statistic, highlighting inspiring stories about the power of friendship, and launching new products to further encourage our community to rally around their friends today.”

According to Facebook, all users are now connected to one another within a maximum only 3.57 degrees of separation.

That means that every random stranger on the social network knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows half of a person who knows you.

It is kind of weird how many half-people use Facebook, but then again, there are a lot of people with accounts for their cats.

Friends Day videos and sticker packs

Facebook Friends Day Video

In honor of Friends Day, Facebook has also introduced a new Friends Day Video feature, which can be accessed through Facebook.com/friendsday.

The video is auto-generated from pictures and comments shared by your Facebook friends, but don’t worry: You can edit out all of your drunk pictures and swap them with those pictures of you and your friends volunteering at the animal shelter instead.

You do that, right?

In addition to the Friends Day Video, Facebook is also adding a number of “Best Friends” stickers, which feature a cartoon armadillo and raccoon, which are, of course, the BFFs of the animal kingdom.
