Jay and Silent Bob game launches on equity crowdfunding platform Fig
Film director Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob characters may soon bring their unique brand of foul-mouthed pothead humor to their very own video game, at least if a new crowdfunding campaign from Super Comboman developer Interabang Entertainment is successful.
Interabang describes the new game, which is called Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch, as a “a colorful side-scrolling tag-team beat-em-up.”
“The iconic characters, hilarious dialogue, and the sheer surreality of the Askew-niverse got us through the rough patches of development hell and life’s struggles,” Interabang said in the game’s campaign description. “We cut our teeth in combat-based game development and always thought it would be amazing to see Jay and Silent Bob in a game like the ones we make. We often wondered, ‘Why hasn’t anybody done this game yet?'”
The “Askew-niverse” refers to the shared setting of Smith’s films, which are produced by his studio, View Askew Productions. They include films like Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma.
According to Interabang, both Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, who portray Jay and Silent Bob in the films, respectively, will provide the voices for their characters.
Why crowdfunding?
Interabang launched its campaign for Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch on equity crowdfunding platform Fig, which is probably best known as the platform that funded Psychonauts 2 at over $3.8 million.
Fig allows users to support projects using the traditional backer model popularized by platforms like Kickstarter, but it also allows users to support projects as unaccredited investors with the potential to make a profit off of the completed product.
The studio did not say why it chose Fig specifically, but it did explain why it decided to go the crowdfunding route rather than using a traditional publisher.
“Jay and Silent Bob sell marijuana outside of a convenience store, swear profusely, and are constantly on the prowl for booty,” Interabang said. “If we had to censor these aspects of their personalities we would have failed to faithfully translate the characters to a game. We want our heroes to curse, smoke a blunt, and do a back flip scissor kick to a pussy troll without having a traditional publisher police officer watering down our crazy ideas.”
So far, the campaign has already raised over $18,000 of its $400,000 goal, and roughly 89 percent of the amount raised has come from users classified as investors rather than standard backers.
