Latest Apple event news: 4″ iPhone SE, 9.7″ iPad Pro to be announced March 21
The Apple, Inc. rumor mill keeps on churning with various new reports about an alleged forthcoming product launch event emerging Friday and Saturday.
At the top of the list is a new date for the event, with Buzzfeed placing it as March 21st, one day before Apple is due in court over its feud with the Government over iPhone unlocking; previously the event was believed to be being held March 15.
What will be launched at the event has also changed. Top of the list is still believed to be an 4 inch iPhone based on the iPhone 5S, but at least according to 9to5Mac the phone will not go by the names of the iPhone 6c or iPhone 5se, but simply the iPhone SE.
Details of the phone have also changed: while the internals we expected to see the new iPhone (we’ll just call it the new iPhone given its alleged name changes with the wind) include an A9 chip manufactured by both TSMC and Samsung, 2.5D cover glass with curved edges like on the iPhone 6s, NFC for Apple Pay and metal casing remain, originally it was believed to be shipping 8-MP rear-facing camera, whereas KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a research note to investors saying that it will ship with a 12-MP camera instead.
That same note gives us a possible price as well, with Kuo saying the phone will ship for between $400-500, significantly less that the existing iPhone models.
Other details claimed in the report include the new 4-inch iPhone featuring 16GB and 64GB storage capacities, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, Live Photos support, and a slightly larger 1,642 mAh battery compared to the iPhone 5s.
3D Touch is apparently not making the cut and will remain exclusive to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus “as a differentiating feature.”
iPad
Original reports had Apple announcing the iPad Air 3 during the event, but this has now shifted to Apple instead announcing a new 9.7 inch iPad Pro; Apple has previously had an iPad at this size but apparently the new version is getting the Pro treatment from its bigger 12.9 inch iPad Pro cousin.
According to a separate report from 9to5Mac the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro will have nearly identical features and specifications as the bigger model, including the A9X processor and RAM upgrades from the 12.9-inch model, and will also include updated display technology to support the Apple Pencil, although we hope it won’t ship with the same technical issues the 12.9 inch iPad Pro model has suffered from.
Apple has yet to send out invites for the event, so be it March 15 or March 22, all we can do now is sit back, enjoy the popcorn, and watch the various “reports” and leaks emerge over the coming 3 weeks.
