Upcoming PlayStation 4 update will let you stream games to PC and Mac
A new update for PlayStation 4 is entering closed beta testing tomorrow, and according to Sony, one of the features in the works for the patch is native support for game streaming on PC and Mac.
This functionality has already been available through unofficial third-party apps, but Sony’s update would offer official support on the PlayStation itself.
Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, first teased the feature in November on Twitter, saying: “Some people asked if we plan to provide Remote Play function to PC, and yes, we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac.”
There are currently few details available about how exactly Remote Play will work, and it looks like it will not be available for testing just yet in the closed beta. However, the company did say in a blog post that “you can look forward to it soon.” Whatever that means.
Other new features
While Remote Play is certainly the biggest feature arriving in the update, there are several other highly anticipated additions coming as well, several of which improve the console’s social functions.
One feature, which really seem like something PlayStation 4 should have had all along, is the ability to receive notifications when your friends sign on. At the same time, you will also now be able to set your status as “Offline” so no one can see how many hours a day you spend playing video games.
PlayStation 4 will also be getting a new Scheduled Event feature, which will make it easier for users to schedule an online play date with their friends.
And finally, the update will be adding livestreaming support for Dailymotion for those of you who want to broadcast your games but do not actually want anyone to watch them.
The closed beta for the new update goes live tomorrow, but so far there is no information on when it will be officially rolled out.
