Blizzard job posting hints at an unannounced Diablo game
There is a strong possibility that Blizzard Entertainment is working on another game in its beloved Diablo franchise, at least according to a handful of new positions posted to the company’s job board.
The new jobs positions are for various types of artists to work on lighting, character design, and concept art, all of which play a key role in the earliest stages of game creation.
The subhead for each new position lists their purpose as “UNANNOUNCED PROJECT – Diablo,” and the job requirements include a brief description of the type of people Blizzard is looking to hire for the project.
Here is the description from the posting for a Senior Concept Artist:
“Blizzard Entertainment is seeking exceptionally skilled and passionate senior concept artists to help drive the vision of characters and worlds in our next hit game!”
“We’re looking for artists that are self-starting, versatile, and enjoy being part of a collaborative environment. The ideal candidate shares our sensibilities, loves dark medieval worlds, and feels there are countless stories left to tell in the Diablo universe!”
Diablo 4 or something else?
The most recent Diablo game released was Diablo III, which came out in 2012. An expansion, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, was released in 2014. While there have been a number of content updates since then, there has so far been no indication of when either another expansion or a full sequel will be released.
Blizzard’s new positions could be intended for either, but there is also the possibility that the studio could be creating an entirely new game set in the Diablo universe.
With the release of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft in 2014 and Heroes of the Storm in 2015, Blizzard has proven that it is willing to translate its existing franchises into other genres, and with Overwatch, it has shown that it can also step out its comfort zone, so a new type of Diablo game might not be out of the question.
Whatever the new game may end up being, it will likely be several years before Blizzard is ready to share any details about it, and of course, there is always the chance that the game could be cancelled long before it is officially revealed, as according to studio head Mike Morhaime, that is apparently something that Blizzard does a lot.
