Withings plus IFTTT equals safer smart homes

Withings SA announced a partnership with IFTTT, a web-based service that utilizes conditional statements to automate actions, to enhance home security.

Withings_HomeConnecting Withings Home, an HD security camera equipped with environmental sensors, to IFTTT adds more household automation features as the connection allows the device to communicate with Philips Hue, Nest Thermostat, WeMo products, to name a few.

The Withings Home features a 135° wide-angle zoom, infrared night vision, and the ability to detect levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) inside the home, and can be used as a communication device thanks to its interactive push-to-talk feature. New parents can also benefit from the Withings Home’s Baby Monitor Mode for continuous monitoring, and it also includes curated lullaby sound & light programs.

With IFTTT you can create your own recipes to improve the automation features of your home or you can choose from the various Recipes in the Withings IFTTT channel such as reinforcing privacy by turning off the Withings Home automatically when the user gets home, or automatically turning on the Withings Home when a user locks the SmartThings door lock and triggers a Philips Hue light to blink when motion is detected. Another recipe automatically turns on the WeMo air purifier when bad air quality is detected by the Withings Home.

Reaching Civilization Scale

The global connected market is expected to reach $6,217 million by 2020, and smart locks are pegged to be one of the drivers in its growth as more are becoming interested in securing their homes. This holds especially true for places with relatively high crime rate.

Withings and IFTTT’s integration bodes well for the smart home device maker, as this means it will play nice with more connected home devices, even if those devices are not intentionally designed to be compatible.

Since its release in 2011, IFTTT has been helping various aspects of our lives communicate with one another. From instantly posting on Facebook when a new photo is taken to downloading tagged photos to a cloud storage folder, turning on the lights when you get home to setting the thermostat to the right temperature based on the weather, IFTTT has achieved what has been dubbed “Civilization Scale“.

Civilization Scale is not just about connecting devices to the Internet to be remotely controlled, but it is about connected devices talking to one another and perform automatic actions when a trigger is detected. IFTTT is helping IoT achieve Civilization Scale as it allows for connected devices, which previously do not support communication, communicate with one another.
