How to book a ride directly from Google Maps on your mobile
A couple of years ago, Uber was integrated into Google Maps allowing users to ‘Get an Uber’, see estimated pick-up and drop-off times and the estimated fare of their trip. However, prior to the latest update on Google Maps, users had to scroll down to the bottom of the list of travel routes to try and book a ride.
Not only does the latest update to Google Maps ensure Uber gets placed in a more prominent position, but there are also a variety of new ride-sharing companies added to the list.
Five ride-sharing providers join Uber on Google Maps
In addition to Uber, users will also have the option of five other providers across five countries. The new additions include 99Taxis in Brazil, Ola Cabs in India, Hailo in the UK and Spain, mytaxi in Germany and Spain, and Gett in the UK.
Ride-sharing providers get a dedicated tab
The latest update to Google Maps brings a dedicated tab for ride-sharing companies, located next to the existing walking, bicycling, transit and driving tabs. When you search for directions on your mobile device, you can now tap the taxi tab to see if Uber, Gett, Hailo or one of the others will be quicker rather than the existing options.
“When you’re leaving work to meet a friend for dinner, you can easily compare your options to find the fastest way there, without having to open multiple apps,” writes Google engineer Holger Flier.
How to book a ride in Google Maps
Search for directions on your device in Google Maps > tap the new taxi tab. If you have one or more of the ride-sharing companies apps installed on your device you will be able to see which options are available in your area, including pick up times and fare estimates.
Tip: If you are using Uber, Google Maps will show you options for UberX, UberXL and UberBlack when available.
Select the provider that you want and you will go directly to the app where you can book your ride.
The latest updates to Google Maps will be rolling out over the next few days to all Android users while the changes will be “coming very soon” to iOS users.
