Microsoft’s Edge browser finally gets long-awaited extensions
It’s been sometime coming, but extensions for Microsoft’s Edge browser are finally here – for Windows Insiders in the Fast ring at least. Microsoft just announced that Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14291 will include some, “very cool new things” including Edge extensions.
In a separate blog post Microsoft listed the extensions which will include Microsoft Translator for over 50 languages, a Mouse Gestures extension – allows “customers to perform basic browsing tasks by right-clicking and then gesturing with the mouse” – and an preview version of the Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). Microsoft also stated that later in the year there will be extension from AdBlock, Adblock Plus, Amazon, LastPass, Evernote, and more.
To use the extensions click on ‘More’ at the top right in Microsoft Edge and then hit ‘Extensions’, and ‘Get extensions’. At the moment these extensions are only available on PC and tablet. However, Windows Phone 8.1 users (eligible devices here) will be soon able to get on the Fast ring as Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 is now available as an upgrade.
As for the other cool new things Microsoft revealed that Edge users can now pin tabs. “To pin a tab, right-click on the tab you want to pin and choose ‘Pin tab’. To unpin a tab, right-click on the pinned tab you want to unpin and choose ‘Unpin tab’,” Microsoft explains.
Other improvements include the ability to copy any link into your clipboard, changes to the close button (for easier visibility and closeability), a Japanese one-handed kana touch keyboard as well as a Japanese lined-mode Text Input Canvas, a much better clock and alarm app and an updated Maps app. The latter is probably where “cool” is most merited, as Microsoft explains here.
The Hub plus Feedback App is a big part of the update, so now you can find all Windows 10 feedback in one place and if you feel the need talk to engineers at Microsoft or anyone else about bugs and known issues for PC and mobile.
