BlueData Software CEO reveals the three secrets to market success | #BigDataSV

Making it easy for its customers to deploy Big Data infrastructure is the goal of BlueData Software, Inc.. Its pre-packaged software is a comprehensive solution that allows customers to go from bare-metal to up and running in as little as week, without the need for multiple admin support.

Kumar Sreekanti, cofounder and CEO of BlueData Software, joined theCUBE cohosts John Furrier (@furrier), cofounder and CEO of SiliconANGLE, and George Gilbert (@ggilbert41), Wikibon big data and analytics analyst, at the Fairmont San Jose in San Jose, California, during the BigDataSV 2016 event in San Jose, California, where theCUBE is celebrating #BigDataWeek, including news and events from the #StrataHadoop conference. Sreekanti, Gilbert and Furrier discussed BlueData’s strategy and success stories.

VMware for Big Data

“I want to fundamentally change the data consumption model,” returning CUBE alumni Sreekanti declared, describing BlueData’s quest to make on-prem Big Data deployment a simple, fast task.

Calling it the ‘Big Data big easy’ model, Sreekanti talked about how BlueData was founded on giving cloud experience on-prem: “Think of us as a VMware for Big Data,” he said, drawing the comparison between the virtualization services VMware offers and the cloud-like experience BlueData Software provides on-prem for its customers.

‘Future proofing’ Big Data

As the technology matures, BlueData Software believes strongly in the importance of built-in future proofing for its customers. With “lots of new technology adding value,” Sreekanti said that BlueData Software has “conquered” Hadoop and Spark and are now looking at other applications.

The company believes that a customer should be able to get up and running whichever platform they choose.

Three rules for market success

With a growing customer and partner base, including Intel, Cloudera, Hortonworks and a new partnership with Dell, who are “enthusing” BlueData Software to their clients, Sreekanti said that BlueData Software is “doing well.”

Asked to give his secrets for adjusting to the market from an entrepreneurial point of view, Sreekanti gave three rules:

  • Build good product.
  • Spend diligently.
  • Find good customers.

“At the end of the day, I’m focused on the customer … on solving the customer problems,” he said.

Hints on the future for BlueData

Gilbert asked about the potential of BlueData Software transferring to the cloud, and Sreekanti agreed that although the focus has been for on-prem application rather than cloud-based, there are possibilities of a hybrid version, and he promised to talk about it next time he visited theCUBE.
