An Apple Original Series: Tech giant secretly schmoozing A-list celebs to drum up talent for slew of shows
Is Apple Inc. secretly turning up at big movie events, sidling up to A-list Hollywood actors in a bid to get them onside before the tech giant launches a handful of series designed to match or outrun the magnificence of Netflix, Inc. and Amazon.com, Inc.? It seems so, according to a recent detailed report by Fast Company. The reports states Apple’s ambitions are also matched by Google, Alibaba and Facebook.
If Apple does have its eyes on An Apple Original Series, it’s keeping intentions under wraps. “Apple slipped into Sundance practically unnoticed,” said the article in Fast Company, noting that most tech companies like to make a splash when attending big events such as the recent Sundance festival held in Utah.
In spite of the secrecy Apple hasn’t exactly kept a low profile concerning its TV ambitions. The company recently reported it was in the process of creating what might best be described as a project rather than a TV series: a show about apps. Not something that will ignite the public’s curiosity compared to past speculation last year that Apple was meeting with execs in Hollywood in a bid to compete with Netflix.
There is also, first reported by the Hollywood Reporter back in February, rumblings that Apple was working on its “inaugural” TV series; a violence-packed and sex-fueled romp on the life of rap artist Dr. Dre (called Vital Signs). This is a bid to promote Apple Music though, not create a blockbuster series in the form of a Netflix-type series.
The success of Amazon and Netflix is no doubt something of an inspiration to Apple, and according to the Fast Company article (more of an in-depth investigation) the big wins by the former two companies has also not been missed by Google, Facebook and Alibaba, who have their own ambitions in TV – explained in the story.
At the moment the conclusion made by people reportedly in touch with people working deep on the inside of Apple is that the company is still “a bit disorganized”, stating that Apple is yet to create any kind of “coherent” strategy for Hollywood. That said, Apple isn’t exactly short of funds, so don’t be surprised if these heady rumors turn into a reality.
