HPE launches IoT platform to help companies manage their connected devices

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is making waves at IoT World 2016 in Santa Clara this week with a new management system designed to help companies process information from the connected universe. The Universal Internet of Things Platform, as the offering is called, promises to streamline every major step of the analysis process starting from the initial data aggregation stage.

HPE says that built-in device controls provide the ability to define what measurements should be collected out in the field, import the information via the most suitable network protocol and then convert it into a format that can be easily processed further down the line. According to the vendor, the final output is made compatible with oneM2M, a specification meant to standardize communications among different types of WiFi-enabled hardware. That means the new platform is able to push sensory transmissions back out to another end-point just as easily as it can send the data to a number-crunching application for analysis.

Organizations have a number of options if they take the latter route. HPE makes it possible to incorporate machine-generated transmissions into visual dashboards for easy viewing, or break down the information using its more advanced analytics tools. The lineup includes the Vertica columnar store, the more than 60 data crunching services that make up its recently unveiled HAVEn OnDemand suite and a handful of industry-specific applications. Once all is said and done, the insights that come on the other end can be distributed to the intended recipients via the Universal Internet of Things Platform’s outbound API.

HPE hopes the system’s broad feature set will level the playing field against the numerous other vendors that are selling software for analyzing machine-generated data. The list includes not only traditional technology vendors like IBM Corp., but also industrial equipment makers such as General Electric Co. and Hitachi Ltd. that boast a significant home advantage over their software-oriented peers.
