Report: Samsung Galaxy S7 Active to go on sale June 10 with 4000 mAh battery
Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd. is set to release its new Galaxy S7 Active phone and a new leak Monday show’s that the phone is getting a battery upgrade among other features.
According to VentureBeat, the specs for the Galaxy S7 Active closely matches those of the standard Galaxy S7 and will include a memory slot, something the Galaxy S6 Active (like the S6) lacked.
The phone itself will retain similar styling features of both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6 Active, but has grown in size, with the thickness of the phone increasing out of 9.9 millimeters, up from 8.6 millimeters for the Galaxy S6 Active; weight has also increased from 195 grams up from 170 grams.
A new 4000mAh capacity battery, up from the Galaxy S6 Active’s 3500mAh battery (and 3000mAh in the standard Galaxy S7) is being blamed for the weight gain, although the phone itself will still sport the standard 5.1 inch 1440 x 2560-pixel Super AMOLED display screen from the Galaxy S7.
Excluding the extra battery power, under the hood isn’t seeing a lot in the way of changes, with the phone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor supported by 4GB of RAM, with 32GB of built-in storage.
Like the Galaxy S7, the Active will also ship with Android 6.0 marshmallow.
The cameras in the phone are the same as the Galaxy S7, with a 12-megapixel camera (down from 16-megapixel in the Galaxy S6 Active) with a front facing camera of 5-megapixels; of note, like the standard Galaxy S7, the new lower megapixel camera is dual pixel, meaning that despite offering fewer megapixels it does take a better picture.
Niche phone
The Galaxy Active range has always been pitched as a “rugged” phone that can be used safely outdoors, complete with dust and water resistance, and in theory is hard to break; while that will remain true for the new Galaxy S7 Active, Samsung returned dust and waterproofing to its standard Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge this year after not offering in it the Galaxy S6 (they had previously offered in with the Galaxy S5) so the Active itself won’t have as a bigger point of differentiation.
That said, companies who are looking for a rugged phone with improved battery life will find it appealing, be it that it will always remain a niche phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is said to be going on sale June 10 and will be offered exclusively by AT&T.
