Blurred lines: A consumer tech company’s venture into enterprise | #LenovoTechWorld

SAP SE’s partnership with Apple generated a lot of buzz about how the companies were going to bring the experience Apple consumers know and love to the enterprise space. Indeed, there is clearly a melding of the consumer and enterprise tech worlds taking place. Now Lenovo Group Ltd., a large established company most famous for its consumer technology, is making a foray into the enterprise space, and with its choice of partners, it looks like they mean business.

Stu Miniman (@stu), cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, said today at the Lenovo Tech World Conference in San Francisco, “The lines between consumer, enterprise and cloud are blurring.” He mentioned the talk that Lenovo’s CEO Yang Yuanqing gave at the conference. Yuanqing said that many may be surprised to hear Lenovo say that personal computing is dying and going away; it’s now about connected communicating.

Lenovo is making strides to spread out from the consumer space and penetrate the enterprise.

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it

John Walls, cohost of theCUBE, spoke about the partnering strategies Lenovo is using to gain footing outside its traditional market. “Their philosophy right now is, if we don’t do that, we’re going to align ourselves with people who are very good at that,” he said.

Miniman agreed and pointed to the Lenovo-Motorola mobile phone’s use of the Android operating system. “Why build the operating system when Android is the most deployed operating system in the mobile space?” he asked.

Miniman also said that while Lenovo has its own networking capabilities, “For hardcore networking, they’re going to partner with Juniper.”

IBM center stage

One interesting differentiator for Lenovo is its use of IBM server technology. Miniman said that IBM was making a lot of progress in the server space until Cisco came in and “ate their lunch.” Miniman added, “At Lenovo, they are going to be a centerpiece for the enterprise push that Lenovo is making.”
