Containers move to Enterprise: A new direction for an old technology | #HPEdiscover

Container technology has been around for a very long time.  Recently, there has been a resurgence in interest in them, thanks to Docker, Inc. and how they can be used to innovate within the cloud.

Vish Mulchand, senior director of Product Management and Marketing at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE), and Mohit Bhatnagar, VP of Products at ClusterHQ, Inc., sat down with Dave Vellante (@dvellante), host of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during HPE Discover 2016 in Las Vegas.

Using old technology to solve new problems

Containers are an essential part of anything you do on the Internet today, and it has been this way for years. But they are considered an old, inflexible technology by some. CluserHQ is betting on the opposite and is moving forward with bringing container technology to Enterprise.

“We are very passionate about delivering the whole vision of containers to Enterprise,” said Bhatnagar. “Our focus is on the data management side of it.”

Containers vs. virtual machines

While Virtual Machines (VM) are certainly very popular and one of the darlings of cloud-based computing, containers are able to work with VM technology to enhance it, and in some cases have advantages over them.

“VM technology allowed us to get much higher efficiency, etc. Containers in that sense takes it one step further: Containers have shared operating systems, so it becomes much lighter weight,” explained Bhatnagar.
