DockerCon 2016 showed a company in transition, says Wikibon

The recent DockerCon 2016, the third annual U.S. conference, showed off Docker Inc. as a company in transition from being the leader of a popular open source project to a vendor focused on financial goals and longer-term operations, writes Wikibon Lead Cloud Analyst Brian Gracely.

Docker continues to expand its project portfolio both with packaged software and a set of software-as-a-service offerings. Announcements at the conference included embedding Container Orchestration into the core container technology, Docker for Mac and Windows, Docker for Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, distributed application bundles, and the opening of the Docker Store, which brings app store functionality to the Docker community.

Docker executives said the company is gaining traction, with many Fortune 500 opportunities, and that they intend to build a company that will allow its ecosystem to generate $8-$10 of revenue for every $1 that Docker realizes. They laid out their plans to monetize the company during the conference. Gracely analyzes those in the full Research Alert.
