Report: AWS-VMware accord opens new hybrid cloud possibilities

On-premises and public cloud computing have developed largely independent of each other, with each using different hardware, software and data center architectures. These basic differences have made the promise of hybrid computing – to enable applications to access resources and data both on premise and in the cloud – difficult to realize.

The new partnership between Amazon Web Services and VMware Inc. promises to move hybrid cloud closer to reality, at least for applications running on VMware platforms, writes Wikibon Lead Big Data and Analytics Analyst George Gilbert. In his first Professional Alert on the agreement, “AWS/VMware Agreement: Scenario Planning for Big Data,” Gilbert discusses three potential scenarios from the agreement:

  1. AWS offers a separate VMware cloud;
  2. AWS manages vSphere virtual machines (VMs) in addition to its native Xen VMs; and
  3. AWS extends the second scenario to manage on-premise edge appliances as well.

Gilbert provides detailed analysis of the benefits and limitations of each of these scenarios in the full Professional Alert. IT operations professionals who want to prepare to take advantage of the new agreement will find advice on different usage scenarios.
