Cockroach Labs raises $27M and launches enterprise version
The former Googlers at open-source cloud database startup Cockroach Labs Inc. have raised $27 million in a Series B round that included Redpoint Ventures, GV, Benchmark, Index Ventures and FirstMark Capital.
Founded in 2015 by former Google Inc. engineers Spencer Kimball, Peter Mattis and Ben Darnell, Cockroach Labs’ main product is CockroachDB, a scalable SQL database that was built based on a white paper that led to Google’s development of its Spanner database.
CockroachDB takes a different approach to Spanner. In addition to being open-source, it combines the functions of SQL with the horizontal scalability common to NoSQL offerings to provide enterprise-grade disaster recovery.
The unique name the company has taken for itself was intentional, since the database is designed to replicate itself rather like cockroaches breed. It distributes information held within the database, providing protection against database failure at any point with what the company describes as its “multi-active availability.” As Cockroach Labs’ founder and Chief Executive Spencer Kimball explained to VentureBeat, “it means multiple servers have replicas of your data, and there are new protections in place to ensure that in the event of failover, applications built on top of the database will not experience potentially damaging inconsistencies.”
In addition to the new funding, Cockroach Labs also announced that CockroachDB was now officially available in both basic and for-pay editions with the release of version 1.0. The commercial version, CockroachDB Enterprise, adds distributed and incremental backup and restore features with support for external storage solutions such as Amazon Web Services’ S3, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure.
Interestingly, the Enterprise version is being launched without set pricing. Infoworld reports that enterprises putting the software into production have 30 days to negotiate a license and start receiving support.
As part of the deal, Redpoint General Partner Satish Dharmaraj is joining the company’s board. Including the new round, Cockroach Labs has raised $53.3 million to date. Previous investors that didn’t participate in the new round include Sequoia Capital, Techammer and Work-Bench.
