EMERGING TECH

This South African company wants to bring IoT to miners with cloud and telecom

The Internet of Things-telecom relationship is heating up, with a South African outfit aiming to provide end-to-end data solutions with cloud.

“We recently became part of the Telkom Group,” said Lawrence Weitzman, managing executive of technology transformation solutions at Business Connexion Pty. Ltd., an information and communications technology provider. “Telkom is the national carrier within South Africa, so we can provide an end-to-end digital solution to our customer base,” he explained in an interview at Dell EMC World in Las Vegas, Nevada

Mining and manufacturing are among the business types BCX serves, along with finance, retail and others, Weitzman told Rebecca Knight (@knightrm), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor). (* Disclosure below.)

In addition to telecom technology, cloud computing is key to the end-to-end delivery services, BCX offers. “A pay-as-you-use type of solution is what Virtustream [cloud management software] brings, and that’s what our clients want,” said Bertus Van Heerden, executive of technology transformation solutions at BCX.

BCX is watching vertical IoT technology for innovations that can facilitate end-to-end solutions, Weitzman stated.

IoT goes underground

“We’ve got a big mining and manufacturing customer base, so for us, the IoT solution sets and moving to edge computing, I think, is one of the bigger opportunities for us as an organization,” Weitzman said.

Management Execution Systems in mines and Enterprise Resource Planning  systems are of particular interest to BCX’s mining customers, according to Weitzman. These companies may operate in underground mines where data analytics and speedy communication for safety purposes are big concerns.

These same technologies can also enable company members to work remotely. “Being part of a national carrier — that’s where our ability and having that connectivity available is there to provide our customers with that solution,” Weitzman concluded.
