Watch live: exploring Veeam’s market position at VeeamON 2017

What’s the market position and opportunity for data backup and recovery specialist Veeam Software Inc. as it builds an ecosystem?

Looking to answer these questions and others, SiliconANGLE is at VeeamON 2017, currently underway in New Orleans, Louisiana, with live, exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE.

“Veeam is incredibly popular for midsized companies. It has low overhead, and is very focused on virtualized environments. It does a whole lot of things in much less time with efficiency and at a lower cost than traditional products,” said David Floyer, lead analyst and chief technology officer at Wikibon Research. (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE.)

The Data Protection as a Service market is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 30.1 percent from 2016 to 2024, according to a Transparency Market Research report, and will reach $46.4 billion by the end of the forecast period.

Veeam has found that the majority of chief information officers demand always-on availability, and the company is bridging this availability gap, according to Matt Kalmenson, vice president of sales, cloud and service providers, North America, at Veeam.

Rumors emerged in March that Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. was considering acquiring Veeam to bolster its own data center backup and recovery business. HPE trails Veeam in the market, according to Gartner Inc.’s most recent Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Software report. Gartner placed Veeam in the “Leaders” category, while HPE only just scraped into the “Challenger’s” box.

With Veeam’s revenues of $607.4 million in 2016, the acquisition rumors suggest the purchase price for the company could be in the range of $1.5 billion to $2 billion.

When Veeam launched it only offered backup for VMware Inc., but it later added support for Microsoft Corp. It was hinted at that VMware would come up with its own recovery services together with Amazon Web Services and thus exclude Veeam.

“I think personally VMware would do better integrating with Veeam and letting them have some of this marketplace. Their customers would too. They’d be doing themselves a great disservice if they don’t,” Floyer said. “The main thing is their customers love Veeam. People hate changing their backup systems. If VMware were to force something here, customers wouldn’t be happy.”

Keynote speakers at VeeamON 2017 include Sanjay Poonen, chief operating officer, customer operations at VMware; Mark Russinovich, chief technology officer for Microsoft Azure; Frank Palumbo, senior vice president of Cisco global data center and virtualization sales at Cisco Systems Inc.; and Bill Philbin, senior vice president and general manager for storage and big data segment solutions, data center infrastructure group at HPE.

Other speakers include Veeam executives Ratmir Timashev, co-founder and former chief executive officer; Peter McKay, president and chief operating officer; Paul Mattes, vice president of global cloud group; Danny Allan, vice president of cloud and alliance strategy; John Metzger, vice president of global product marketing; and Rick Vanover, director of technical product marketing and product strategy.
