Dropbox Paper gets a G Suite-style upgrade

Dropbox Inc. is making it easier to keep track of files in Paper, its collaborative document editing service.

The company today released an update for the tool that brings several notable usability improvements. Among the most significant is a new version control tab that logs edits, title modifications and other major changes to a file. Its introduction follows hot on the heels of Google Inc. enhancing the version control bar included in its own core G Suite services.

Both companies look to help teams better track how individual members contribute to a project and synchronize their work. In Dropbox, changes now also show up on the homepage, which has been redesigned to display documents with unread updates and Paper projects alongside a user’s regular files. The revamped interface also highlights the documents that they’ve accessed most recently, another common point with G Suite.

File navigation in the mobile version of Paper has been improved as well. Besides the ability to view documents, the app now allows them to be moved around and enables the creation of new folders. Paper lead project manager Kavitha Radhakrishnan described this expanded mobile support to Engadget as the “number one ask” that the company has received.

Within files, users will be greeted by a new preview function. Hovering over a link to another Paper document brings up a small box that offers a glimpse into its contents.

Dropbox is topping it all off with an upgrade to the Paper programming interface. The enhancement introduces the ability to let users not only view their folders but also create and edit files from othe applications. That should increase the incentive for developers to integrate their services with Paper.

Most of the features in today’s update are available immediately. The exception is the new version control tab, which Dropbox plans to roll out gradually over the next few weeks.
