Apple updates Final Cut Pro X with 360-degree VR video editing

Apple Inc.’s new powerful iMac Pro went on sale this week and to coincide with the launch, the company has released an updated version of its video editing app Final Cut Pro X.

Final Cut Pro 10.4 includes support for 360-degree virtual reality video editing and High Dynamic Range video, as well as advanced color grading tools. The updated software takes advantage of the performance capabilities of the iMac Pro’s graphics chip, which Apple said “lets you do more than just immerse yourself in VR worlds. It lets you create them from scratch.”

The biggest update for Final Cut Pro X is support for 360-degree VR video editing. Video can be edited in monoscopic format for flat-screen viewing or stereoscopic format if viewing the video on a VR headset.

Updates to companion app Motion will allow the insertion of two-dimensional and 3D titles and graphics into the video, directly accessible in Final Cut Pro X. You can preview your work in real time on an HTC VIVE headset or other compatible VR headset. And the updated version of Compressor now supports 360-degree VR video, High Efficiency Video Coding format and HDR export.

The updated Final Cut Pro also includes new color grading tools. Built-in controls in the color wheels allow for easy adjustment of hue, saturation and brightness, while color curves allow ultra-fine color adjustments. The new color grading tools support both HDR and Standard Dynamic Range video.

Additional updates include audio effects plugins from Logic Pro, the ability to import projects from the iOS version of iMovie, and High Efficiency Video Codec and High Efficiency Image File Format support for importing and editing.

For existing users, Final Cut Pro 10.4, Motion 5.4 and Compressor 4.4 are available now as free updates. Alternatively, you can purchase Final Cut Pro for $300, while Motion and Compressor cost $50 each.

Apple has also updated Logic Pro X, its digital audio app, with a refreshed user interface and support for the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro. Logic Pro X also gains the ability for users to send a project to iCloud for adding sounds on the go with GarageBand on iOS.

The new “Track Alternatives” feature will allow users to experiment with different effects and multiple takes on the same track. And the “Selection-based Processing” tool allows for the application of Logic or third-party plugins to a specific audio region.

For existing users, Logic Pro 10.3 is available now as a free update. New users can buy it for $200.
