Amazon Web Services acquires advanced threat detection startup Sqrrl

Amazon Web Services Inc. has acquired Sqrrl Data Inc., a Massachusetts-based cybersecurity software company that specializes in advanced threat detection for large enterprises.

The price of the deal, first rumored last month, was not disclosed but was previously reported to be “north of $40 million.” Sqrrl had raised $26.5 million coming into its acquisition, including a $12.3 million round in June from Spring Lake Equity Partners, Matrix Partners, Rally Ventures and Accomplice.

“We will be joining the Amazon Web Services family, and we’re looking forward to working together on customer offerings for the future,” Sqrrl said in a statement on its website.

Founded in 2012, Sqrrl originally provided big-data security services for Hadoop, a software framework for storing lots of data on clusters of machines, before later pivoting into offering a broader enterprise-focused threat protection service called Sqrrl Enterprise. Sqrrl’s platform is based on the open-source database software platform developed by the National Security Agency called Accumulo, where a number of the company’s founders previously worked.

The platform offers console-based threat investigation tools that allow users to map systems and files involved in a given breach to enable security analysts to discover advanced threats faster and reduce the time required to investigate them.

The acquisition strengthens Amazon’s hand in the broad cloud services market where it’s the clear leader. AWS earned a third-quarter profit of $520 million, up more than 400 percent from a year ago, on $2.1 billion in revenue.

AWS has parlayed previous acquisitions into new products, such as the Macie cloud security service released in August, which grew out of the purchase of data security startup Harvest.ai Inc. in January 2017.

Amazon’s intentions for Sqrrl are not clear at this stage, but the acquired company noted that for the time being, it was business as usual and it will “continue to work with customers to provide advanced threat hunting capabilities.”
