Facebook rolls out job search to more than 40 new countries

Facebook Inc. added its first job search features more than a year ago, but so far they have been available only in the U.S. and Canada. That changed today, as Facebook announced that it is rolling its job search tools out to more than 40 more countries, including Brazil, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Alex Himel, vice president of local at Facebook, said in a blog post that the company learned a lot from the first year of its job search tools, and it added a few new features based on feedback from both users and businesses. For example, Facebook added a feature that allows job seekers to set alerts for new postings that match their preferences.

Meanwhile, Facebook added tools to help businesses manage their applications and schedule interviews, and it introduced the ability to post jobs on mobile. The company also partnered with online job recruiter ZipRecruiter Inc. to allow businesses to post jobs to Facebook through ZipRecruiter’s dashboard. According to Himel, Facebook’s job search has proven to be especially helpful for local businesses, which can reach local job seekers without having to spend a ton of money on ads.

“Troy, the owner of Striper Sniper Tackle in North Carolina, had trouble finding people with the specific skills he needed until he posted the job on his Facebook Page,” Himel said in providing a couple of examples. “He received 27 applications immediately, and hired 10 people. Ben, operations manager at Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline park in Illinois, received more than 200 applications and filled 11 positions in one week.” Himel added that another business filled seven positions while spending only $20 to boost the post in the news feed.

Facebook’s search tools also seem to have been a hit with job seekers. Market research company Morning Consult surveyed 5,000 adults in the U.S. and found that one in four had either searched for or found a job using Facebook. Himel said that Facebook will continue expanding its job features, and the company plans to invest more than $1 billion this year in programs to help local businesses and job seekers.
