Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey predicts bitcoin will be sole global currency in 10 years
Twitter Inc. and Square Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey has long been known as a cryptocurrency fanboy, but in an interview with The Times of London he said bitcoin will be the sole global currency within 10 years.
“The world ultimately will have a single currency, the internet will have a single currency. I personally believe that it will be bitcoin,” said Dorsey (pictured). This would happen “probably over ten years, but it could go faster.”
The report noted that Dorsey puts his money where his mouth is. Last week he invested in the $2.5 million seed round for Lightning Labs, the company behind the bitcoin lightning protocol, a technology that aims to speed up bitcoin transactions.
Still, he admitted that bitcoin “does not have the capabilities right now to become an effective currency. It’s slow and it’s costly, but as more and more people have it, those things go away. There are newer technologies that build off of blockchain and make it more approachable.”
Dorsey’s cryptocurrency prediction places him ahead of the previous record holder for being an uber-fanboy, John McAfee, who famously said in December that he would “eat his dick if bitcoin didn’t reach $1 million by 2020.”
Never one who likes to be outshone by others, McAfee has doubled down on his offer, providing details on exactly how he plans to eat his dick — and no, we’re not making this up. “How would I go about eating my dick?” McAfee wrote. “I would delegate the task like I delegate all unpleasant tasks. Most likely I would hire a Bangkok prostitute to do it for me. Slowly. Taking years if necessary.”
Confident that he won’t lose the bet, McAfee added that “this is conjecture. It’s mathematically impossible for me to lose this bet.”
