Data systems company ‘unravels’ the complexities of big data

Data has long provided valuable insights for companies, but its rapid expansion with the development of technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, the “internet of things” and streaming applications has created complexities in its implementation. As big data continues to outgrow enterprise capabilities, new companies are emerging to support and accelerate the management of application development and performance.

“Unravel is all about unraveling the mysteries of big data and understanding why things are not performing well. We’re simplifying application performance management for the big data stack,” said Kunal Agarwal (pictured), co-founder and chief executive officer of Unravel Data Systems Inc.

Agarwal spoke with Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara) and George Gilbert (@ggilbert41), hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at the BigData SV event in San Jose, California. They discussed the growth of big data and how Unravel is working to increase its value and efficiency for customers.

Shining a light on data’s mysteries

Working with enterprises through this period of digital transformation, Agarwal discovered the key obstacle businesses face in implementing data insights is a lack of expertise and manpower. Unravel works to simplify application performance and ongoing management challenges to help customers expand use cases and ultimately run big data applications more efficiently without risk of failure.

“We monitor and manage not only one component of the big data ecosystem, but … all of these systems. … You can … understand what’s happening with … your system overall and be able to resolve those problems,” he said.

This all-in-one view expedites processes at all levels of application production, connecting different data sources and offering simple resolutions for any problems that arise, Agarwal stated. “[It’s] not just about an individual application issue itself. Unravel will give you visibility into each app, as well as the overall cluster to help you understand cluster-wide problems,” he said.

Aside from the process improvements it provides, Unravel also offers metrics for businesses to illustrate return on investment unique to individual customer priorities. “We … give them a dashboard, helping them understand what kind of throughput [they are] getting, how many applications [they] were able to develop … and the rate of innovation that’s really happening inside the company on those big data ecosystems,” Agarwal said.

With the big data market craze well underway, many companies like Unravel are competing to support enterprises in data process management. Agarwal claims Unravel stands out from the crowd of monitoring products as an intelligent performance management suite. “We don’t just give you graphs and metrics and say, ‘You go figure it out.’ … We are actually giving people answers,” he concluded.
