Security professionals say on-premises tools fail protect against cloud risks
While enterprises continue to modernize their current information technology infrastructure, applications and processes, security professionals remain concerned that on-premises tools are not adequately providing security against new cloud-related risks.
That’s according to a new report from Sumo Logic Inc. The 2018 Global Security Trends in the Cloud, based on a survey of IT security personnel, found that 76 percent are adopting the DevOps style of combining programmers with IT operations staff when developing software. But only 16 percent were described as being mature cloud adopters despite 75 percent overall identifying themselves as “past the learning stage” of cloud adoption.
A full 97 percent of respondents said security in cloud environments presented a challenge within their organization, with 63 percent saying that cloud requires broader technical expertise to understand threats. Identifying a growing maturity when it comes to tackling risks, 87 percent of respondents said they recognized the need for multiple functions to tackle cloud security, and 82 percent said they have implemented multilayer investigative tools within their organization’s cloud environment.
The solution to the ongoing cloud security challenges may not come from traditional sources. On-premises security information and event management or SIEM tools were found to be unfit for the cloud. Some 83 percent of respondents said that their existing on-premises SIEM platforms have issues, with 51 percent saying they can’t effectivity assimilate cloud data and threats.
“The study illustrates how on-premise tools are failing to adapt to cloud environments” a spokesperson for Sumo Logic told SiliconANGLE. Organizations are struggling to migrate to the cloud, allowing security threats to “fall through the cracks, due in part to legacy tools that are not properly designed for agile cloud systems.”
There is a positive side: A commanding 95 percent of respondents said their organizations would benefit from changes such as new models that break down silos of people, workflows and technology, while 96 percent said they would benefit from additional cloud security capabilities in their tools.
